Is the Castrol High Mileage oil thicker and darker than normal oil and does it smell like trans fluid or did I mistakenly put a container of used fluids with my new oils? A quart went in before I thought something was probably wrong. I am planning to drain and fill with new oil.

Worried,

It is definetally on the thicker side within each grade. For example, the 10w-30 is 12.2 Cst now, which is just about low 40 weight. Don't drain it! That'd be like setting fire to 10 dollars. It is a great oil.

It was dark, like used oil, and smelled sort of burnt or like transmission fluid. I doubt this is right, and suspect I mixed up used and new fluid containers. I think I have to drain.

That is why I use empty windshield washer & antifreeze bottles for my used oil. On a few rare occasions over the years, I have used the 4-5 quart oil jug I just poured into the engine as new, but afterwards I make sure I keep the used oil in this jug outdoors at all times - next to my two 100 gallon garbage cans & recycle bin for later disposal at my nearest oil reclamation center.

I think this is the problem. I am overdue for the trip to the recycling center. This should be a lesson, since I have to go through the trouble of a second drain and fill.
