I have the same issue with my GMC 6.0L with 5w30 PP or M-1. So I am running 50/50 mix of 5w30 & 10w30 to get a 7.5w30 which ,my engine seems to love and the start up noise has been reduced to a minimum. This issue happens with my vehicle under 50 degrees only as I just returned from Florida with a full fill of 5w30 (just to see what would happen) and had no cold start noise there. My GM engine buddies tell me it is the expansion rate of the engine components (pistons mainly) in addition to the base oil weight. They recommend a 10w but GM wants to get max fuel economy so the engines are speced for 5w. My 7.5w30 does the job as it seems to cling on longer than the 5w and reduce the cold start clatter/tick etc.
