Oh no doubt. A co-worker of mine rescued his elderly neighbors last year. Their portable generator was running outdoors, about 10ft from the side of the house (detached garage way in the back). He found them nearly unresponsive. The once or twice I used my generator, the CO detector is plugged into that power strip as well.
 
I use a Kidde and Nighthawk. I have a peak level of 11ppm but never an alarm condition. I think its our gas cooking stove as it was there in the summer. Our oil fired furnace is new.
