A pile of rags and a pair of gloves has always worked well for me. Maybe a can of non-chlorinated brake cleaner if you're trying to get the bearings completely clean and don't have a parts washer into which you can toss the bearings.
Kerosene, diesel, cheap hardware store enamel paint thinner or a solvent made for cleaning parts like stodard. Gasoline is too hazardous because of the highly flamable fumes.
Thanks. I use elbow grease to a great extent and figured I'd go for the deep clean. A buddy of mine just gets new bearings. I could but I haven't investigated the cost of 'em.
And sorry - I guess I could have submitted this in the solvent/cleaner forum.
