The check engine light comes on occasionally on my son's Ford Explorer........the codes say it is an 02 sensor.

Is there a fuel additive that would help clean them?

Not only time, but how much money will you waste messing around with additives and decreased fuel economy from poor 02 sensor operation?

Just replace it.

Nothing you can do or put in the tank will clean them. +1 on replacing the front, replace the rear only when it has a code.
Old rear O2 is better at avoiding the dreaded P420/430 codes.

+1 Generally the part isn't too expensive and it is an easy fix.

The front lambda is the one that adjusts the A/F mixture. The rear is only a cat wellness/life monitor.

What year mileage?

Exactly.

Trav, you always post correct and useful information. I noticed that and just wanted to compliment you on that.

The cheapest upstream O2 sensor (from rockauto) is only $26-40 each on rockauto, and they will outperform any cleaning you will ever be able to do.

For the same price or a bit more, you can buy the same OEM vendor sensor that came with your car (Denso, NTK/NGK, Bosch, etc).

What is the exact code? It could be upstream, downstream, left bank, right bank. It could also be a blown fuse in the heating circuit.
