I stopped by a So. California Pep Boys store today and noticed their $1.19 SL-rated Citgo Supergard multiweights had a rebate goin' on, good only through Pep Boys. While most brands offer anywhere from $3.60-$6.00 back on a case of conventional (non-syn) oil, the Citgo rebate is for $10.00, good through Nov. 30th. This works out to 36 cents per quart! This isn't a $10 check, but a $10 "cash card" good only for products and services at Citgo stations. Both their oil spec sheets and a Citgo station locator are available through their website Citgo.com.

Turns out that Citgo apparently makes a decent oil. It's claimed 10w-30 flashpoint (a basic indicator of base stock quality) of 451F is higher than Chevron, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Quaker State, and Union 76. Its claimed Viscosity Index (the change of viscosity within a given temperature range) of 137 is better than Chevron, Valvoline, and Union 76.

Here's two virgin oil analyses on Citgo oil:

(By the way, I'm not affiliated with either Pep Boys or Citgo -- I just know a good deal when I see it, and might even bark like a dog if that would get me oil for 36 cents. Well, maybe just one little bark, but no more than that.)
