China tightens grip on rare-earth metals

"One mining company president told The Times that governments that had promised a way out of economic turmoil with bold schemes to subsidise green cars, solar panels and other environmental technology had 'spoken without understanding the upstream of modern products'”.

"There are potential supplies around the world, but prospective miners in Australia and the US are experiencing financing difficulties and as soon as new facilities have emerged in Asia and elsewhere, Chinese companies have quickly become majority investors."

Yup....

I was part of a two-day briefing on this.

It is VERY real.

There are severe anti-competitive practices on part of many of these countries, and it is turning into a REAL security issue amongst other things.

Any place other than China or Russia that has a grip on these resources that we can conqu --neo-colon--- err...make them a US protectorate in mutual self interest??

Is there anything more you can say regarding it being a security issue?

There are some that are trying to prop-up production and capability in this country.

China is stocking up on not just rare-earth metals, but ALL industrial use metals. Much more so than they need for current industrial production.

Whether this is being done to corner the market on one or more of these metals, or simply to stockpile in anticipation of a future metals-backed international currency, who knows?

According to my dad, who's a high-level engineer in the nickel and copper field, there's your reason.

China's metal assets are poor, and they want to make sure they can build their war machine if ever they require the need.

Of course, this is after all their restaurants and buildings finished their love-affair with stainless steel...

China is buying up just about every resources they can. They understand our weakened condition and are taking full advantage.

It's a security concern because if you can't get raw materials, you can't have an independent economy.

They are doing the same things that we did in the first half of the last century that made us a major world player. We seem to be perfectly happy to hand it to them on a silver platter.

Funny, Tempest, during our "technical correction in flux" the local scrapyard was having people line up. China was buying up everything they could. Now the scrapyard is idle.

Why is this a concern NOW? It sure looks like wondering how dangerous the invisible elephants were ...after the stampede already passed through.

So you're saying that China grabbing up of already refined and processed resources is okay?
