Isn't this when the chorus starts to chant, "Cum-ba-ya and wait for the UOAs, Cum-ba-ya..."

Seeing how we are talking about 5W20 oils here failling the fuel economy tests I feel the need to laugh right now.
lol.gif
Now that I got that out of the way!!! I would be more concerned with how well it prevents wear. 5W20 is marginal at best so any deviation and you could experince a lot of valvetrain wear!! Currently it is getting the job done just fine in vechiles calling for it's use. I do understand that fuel economy and anti wear are not related problems. I just think that if someone is going to drop the ball in one area they might drop it else wear as well!

If you're into marketing illicit substances, now be the time to move from crack, crank and smack into oil additives.

Visions of a future street corner on the bad side of your town: Dude, want to party...I got ZDDP. Moly? I got Moly. Antimony? Got some real clean Antimony.

It's not so much an issue of 5W-20's failing the "Test", but rather the 5W-20 reference oils are not making the required 2.3% & 2.0% fuel economy increases after the respective 16 & 96 hours of aging.

And the failures are only borderline fails.

It's probably more of an issue of the test not being relevant - Is it realistic to expect a fuel efficient viscosity like 5W-20 to get better after 96 hours of run time?

GF-4 Oil Article

I have to say I'm a bit skeptical of the P cap for GF-4, but their will be some benefits with deposit control and oxidation. However, the top notch synthetics still use a boat load of ZDDP. I guess racing conditions are seperate from daily driving (unless your a Patman

) Actually, I'll use Patman as an example, his GC in his Vette does very well with P levels lower then Amsoil/M1R/RL. So maybe their are great alternatives.

It also looks like they have taken these GF-4 30wt dino's and lowered the vi @ 100c about .5 to one full cSt for economy gains .

I bet "some" of the higher mile engines love to burn the stuff over the thicker when new SL's .

* Runs out and stocks up on GM EOS, Maxlife, and Synpower additives *

(Actually, I was wondering where all of the valvoline additives have gone lately)

Got some lead oleate or lead naphthenate??

So the concern is (so far) only for the 5W-20 oils?

I was buying a quart of 10W-30 for a brand new snowblower and I saw our local Wally World had GF-4 Texaco Havoline. I picked it up, looked it over, put it back and got an older GF-3 bottle of the same oil instead (the bottle with the antique race car on the front).

Don't know why ... just had some second thoughts.

I love the article about the quicklubes. Are they really worried that the oil they are using won't be 'good enough'...like they're not pumping API SJ 10W-30 in there as it is.

Nope, the oil will be fine...they'll have to rely on their old standbys to destroy their customers' engines - loose/stripped drain plugs and the ever popular filter that is 'close' to being the right one.

After looking at the Havoline 5W-30 GF-4 VOA, I'm fairly confident that the "new GF-4 flavor" will generate little or no surprises.

It's the same add pack with less ZDDP and more moly and the same GRP II+ base oils.

Yes, I'm always happy to see more of a clear oil pour out of the bottle than the "Root Beer" colors produced by additives in some of the formulations during the last year!

My initial impressions of GF-4 5w-30:

Havoline 5w-30 seems clearer and cleaner than GF-3 oils I had been using.

First 2 tanks of fuel with Gf-4 - no noticeable difference. I do suspect that the differences between city and Highway driving are closer with GF-4 but will need more samples to confirm. That is city driving maybe improved mileage.

Thus far I see no reason to be concerned about using Havoline GF-4 dino 5W-30.
