Chevrolet Silverado 4.8 litre

meeze...I have the 5.3L engine in a 2004 Tahoe and several other BITOG members have the 4.8 or 5.3L engine. A lot of data has been posted in the Used Oil Analysis Section with discussion on each situation.

Your choice of oil will depend on how you drive you Silverado (short trips vs. long trips), towing, mountain driving, etc. Some people choose to use a good dino and change the oil more often while others choose a synthetic and tend to extend the OCI a little furter.

I have used Havoline, Castrol GTX and Castrol Syntec with good results. I would suggest Havoline or Castrol GTX and change at 4-5K miles with an AC Delco or Wix filter. Search the UOA section for 4.8 or 5.3L engines and look at the results.

Is it the 5 or 6 qt capacity?

Valvoline Maxlife Dino is $8.89 for 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart. It's supposed to be 10-15% PAO.

That and ST filter would run under $13 out the door and a good 5k OCI combo IMO.

I have M1 10-30 in my '00 Silverado 5.3 now. I am running 1yr OCI's (or when OLM lights up) with Bosch Premium fitler.

I do not notice any CSK with it.

Gotta 4.8 in the pick-em-up.

Mobil 1 5W-30 for winter since it gets kinda chilly round these parts.

Havoline 5W-30 when the earth tilts properly to increase the ambient temperature.

However, decided to switch to Mobil 1 year round after the Havoline is used up.

Planning on 4,000 to 5,000 oil change interval (OCI) with the Mobil 1. Forced to do short distance drives so wanna' keep those intervals short. Also forces me to peek at undercarriage for unusual wear patterns, etc. A couple pumps on the grease gun while down there will hopefully extend life of greased wear items.

And, it's a great place to ponder as I watch the departing oil murmur glub glub glub.

Hi,

Same Engine in my 2000 Silverado and my UOAs on it show that Pennzoil did just as good if not better that Mobil 1 Tri syn for the same OCI.

I'm trying Mobil 7500 right now in it. So far, I'be lost about 1 mpg with it over the Pennzoil that I normally run.

This is over 3 tanks and about 1k miles.

My UOAs are right here ---> 4.8 ltr UOAs

I'll go back to Pennzoil after this OCI since its much cheaper and get the MPG back...

My 5.3L liked Chevron Supreme 10/30 so that's what I'd suggest. The Vortec V8's seem to like oil a tad thicker than what is recommended by GM. My buddie's 5.3L Tahoe also did very well on Chev Supreme 10/30.

Course we're both runnin' GC now so its a bit of a moot point for us but for a dino, Chevron Supreme gets my vote based on UOA's.

Quaker State 4X4 Blend 5w-30.

Love those robust adds I saw in the VOA of the stuff.

Michael
