Interesting on a number of fronts...
* tribofilms are formed by reacted ZDDPs;
* replacement tribofilms require a reserve of unreacted ZDDP;
* different tribofilms based on temperature/surface conditions;
* and what was interesting between the AlSi and steels was that more reactive surface oxides seem to help
* AlSi, some of the "wear" appeared to be the silicon particles being forced down into the softer Al matrix
* second paper talks about the reduction in ZDDP efficacy in fully formulated oils due to the actions of inhibitors and detergents.

Interesting that on the 2nd page( page 49) It mentions that overbased detergents reduce the antioxidant ability of zddp, and that basic detergents improve the friction capability of the oil. I interpret this to mean the really high tbn oils interfere with the zddp putting down a layer?

Sorry for the inconvenience...was posting on a phone in a waiting room (reading paper copies)...was lucky that i got what i did in

Understood, It happens

"Reduction of ZDDP efficiency from the action of inhibitors and detergents."
In the paper it mentioned the bonding of the tribolayer to the surface through oxidation.
It has been said that chemicals compete for surface area.

So what exactly is new? The heat generated by the high shear rate in the elastohydrodynamic regime was discovered?
That would make sense; Italian tune-up gone wild.

There was a paper or article by E-ion posted a while ago where they also claimed the AW ingredients became active before there was metal to metal contact from the extreme pressures in the boundary layer formed by their product.

Further suggesting that changing oil more frequently than needed might not be a good thing? Thanks for sharing...Great stuff.
