I see in the headlines today that in California PG&E just had their fourth electric rate hike for the year hike approved today.
To pay for the storms in 2022 and 2023 and fund further fire mitigation efforts

To pay their bonuses for burning down our forests with their negligence. Blowing up San Bruno in 2010.
That's what happens with a monopoly.

Dunno if I ever mentioned it before, but I hate PG&E. That was a key reason I installed solar. I wish I were off their stinkin' grid.

@alarmguy of course the ever rising cost of energy increases the return on my solar investment, I kinda don't care. I am more mad than anything else. People gotta live, people gotta eat, people gotta get to work, school, you name it. There is so much riches here; perhaps one of these smart companies can use capitalism to help people. Silicon Valley is well known for its philanthropy, but I believe there is room for improvement, specifically where to put that money. Make your money work for you!!! I wanna see the ROI.

Age of the house makes a difference, climate and number of people living in it. We a dont have an electric water heater or an electric cooktop, we do have an electric range and electric dryer. We grill outdoors much of the summer so the oven is not used heavily.
I am curious now that I am looking at your bill again. is the $160.50 your actual payment? I only ask because it says "electric charges" I dont see any taxes. I assume its your actual payment and great rate if it is.

That's actual payment, so all in with taxes, fees, etc.

Plug in hybrids seem to be the sweet spot for suburban people who can drive 100% on electricity most of the time but can go anywhere anytime on gas as they choose. The batteries are much smaller and weigh less. Electric cars can have batteries 1000 lbs + of dead weight to drag around. Don’t need to start an engine cold to run to the store a mile away, or move it in a driveway with a plug in hybrid. They can be charged almost anywhere there is a wall outlet, and if can’t charge, makes no difference.

Do (Don't?) you think the state regulators were complicit in this by trying to minimize costs?

I really dislike paying electric bills (I'm a child of the '70s energy crisis) and wanted to minimize our contribution to climate change so we installed 18kw of panels and even with heat pumps (in a cold climate), an EV and a PIH our power generation bills are $0. We are net-metered so we still pay a monthly transmission fee for the convenience of using the grid as our battery.
