Went to Pep Boys to buy some stuff including a tube of chassis grease. Looked on the shelf to grab some synthetic Mobil 1 grease as I usually do and thought "Is synthetic grease really necessary for lubing the ball joints\steering linking ($6.00 plus per tube)? Was just about to grab a tube of regular $1.99 chassis grease but decided not to buy any for now. So what do you think, is synthetic grease necessary?

Nope, jeeszj. Synthetic's not necessary, but Mobil 1's certainly a great grease for that application. Pep Boys in Texas used to carry Mystik JT-6 High Temperature Lithium Complex #2. Chevron Delo L/Complex #2 is available at truck stops. Also a good Moly-Lith such as Amsol (but, like Mobil 1, it's synthetic) is good for ball joints and steering linkages. All 4 greases mentioned in this post are well-respected by experts and will serve you well.
This is my first post in BITOG. I've used M1 grease for decades without any failures.When I worked for Sea Land container lines as a refrigeration mechanic they were buying it in batches (5 gal tin)and using it everywhere. This was in 1982. I was impressed with it's oil flow qualities while in use so I went to using it at the house. When my wifes 1984 Cadillac had it's first front end alignment @ 100k I figured that new ball joints would be the order of the day but lo and behold no parts were necessary - well, one A frame shim and that was it! The Cadillac dealer was impressed and the SA asked me what I was using. I've used it in every thing since! Cheers all! double vanos
i use the Mystik Hi-temp mentioned above.
If you can get Mystik JT-8 high temp there,over Mobil use it in your apps,,,by the way Mystik has a much better Timken load test than Mobil Synt.,is one of the best lithium complex greases you can get,and the SX-6 is very compairable to most full synt.,,,,,BL
