Silly question but am curious. My car came with 5w40 Castrol from the factory, then used PU 5w40, and now M1 0w40. The dealer will do a free oil change for my next visit and they use Castrol 5w40. Then I would change it again 3-5K later with either M1 or PU whichever I can find cheapest. Is this going to cause me problems later on? I am not sure how each wears on the metals, and if that is a factor at all?

No.
Its not a problem unless you go from PU or M1 to something like "Star" brand oil.....lol

The only thing that I've seen, is that sometimes consumption may go up when switching from brand to brand.

The dealer may say they use Castrol 5w-40 but I would personally have to see that to be certain they did. Recently had my 1st free oil change on my Golf at the dealer. Just have the dealer's word on the oil used. (Really doesn't matter since I'll not go past a 5k oil change unless I'm absolutely certain of the oil used.) Sounds like you've changed your oil twice already. Which oil did you feel ran the best w/your GTI? Too early to tell? I'd run the Pennzoil personally if cost was the same and be done w/it.

According to ted s mixing oils will make them turn into a nasty acid golem that will eat your engine. Now, since you're effectively mixing a little of the old oil with the new oil when you change brands it follows that it will make only a little acid golem. It follows that a smaller golem won't be able to eat the whole engine, just little parts like keepers. The thing is: if even one keeper gets eaten then your engine could suck a valve and that would be a major problem. The trick is to recite appropriately from the Talmud while pouring in the new oil so that the golem knows to respect and obey you instead of eating important engine parts.

That thread went insane real fast.
Op. no harm will come to your engine by mixing oils. Although it may not be ideal its certainly not harmful.
You may want to purchase a golem gun though, just in case they get out when you change your oil next time

Yeah I heard so much crazy stuff herei had to takea break. I asked this question because folks on this site brought it up and wanted a clarification is all. Now a days with oil formulas changing like the diapers on a 3 day old infant every oil Change even with the same brand is probably a different oil ha ha

I noticed no difference except penzoil made my wallet lighter this giving me a slight edge in fuel economy ha ha

Yes I think that is the irrational fear of all anti-mixers.
They just won't admit it.
