I've got a 99 Ranger S/C 4x4 w/ 118,000 trouble-free miles. Tonight, I changed my oil. Decided to go with a 10W30 instead of the usual 5W30. I cranked it up when done and noticed what sounds like a knock coming from the general area of the oil pan. I've been changing my oil for years and have never come across anything like this. Any ideas??? Thanks for your help.

no oil would cause knocking noise.
I used 20W50 in -30C and engine did not make any noise!

I think you have a mechanical problem that showed up at exact time as your oil change. I highly doubt that oil is the cause of your noise.

Hey,

I own a 98 Ranger with the 2.5L 4banger. What kind of oil are you running, and what's under the hood of your Ranger?? Maybe needless to ask but just out of curioisity,,,AR

Did the noise go away after a few seconds? If so it's just a temporary lack of oil pressure while the filter gets filled, which is normal. Usually it's top end noise that makes the rattle, not rods and mains.

Same brand and type of oil? When is the knock present...at start-up or all the time?

I too have increased valve knock that I believe is a result of an interference somewhere in the engine due to many mi's of thinner oil use. In other words, sludge/varnish are responsible for the knock unless there are also underlying mechanical issues....
