In a nutshell, there was just too much potting material on the endcaps and some of it dripped down and formed a blob inside the center tube. Once it was cut open, I gave the blob some heavy poking and prodding, but it didn't budge. The last picture shows the side directly behind the blob on the center tube. I measured the area of filtration material at 73.5 in² with 60 pleats.
