Is that oil any cheaper anyways? If I'm going to run out of bar oil for the day, I mix in whatever oil is laying around, even used if I have nothing else.
But I think its a good idea to get some tackifier in there, unless your bar and chain are almost done anyways, then I guess they well be done only a little bit sooner.

Chain and bar oil is dirt cheap at TSC. It also has a "tacky" component which helps the oil not get flung off off the chain so easily.
You could probably mix some of the 30 with the bar oil , maybe 75% bar oil to 25% 30wt
Use a good bar and chain oil and your bar and chain will last longer. There are some dirt cheap bar oils out there. You can tell the difference.

There are different grades of bar oil for different temps you might be cutting in . Stihl carries these and I'm sure some others .

I've put gear oil in my Stihl 029 when I ran out of bar oil and it works just fine.

I am not smarter than the engineers at Stihl; in a bind, I would use other bar oil if I HAD to get something done - like get out of the driveway...but I stick to Stihl bar and mix oils - I value my saw as much as I like not having problems with it.
In an old Husky, I used to use discount store oils - I was not happy with the bar oil performance, nor with the weird mixing rituals of the cheaper 2 stroke bottles...Now days, I don't mind a little arithmetic, but not when a mistake is going to fry a piston, or foul a plug; ruin my saw or end my cutting day.
The fear of poor outcome (of going with cheap lubricants) nagged me long after the initial joy of saving a few dollars per cord of wood. Cost and price are not at all the same.
In a pinch, I'd use some motor oil or gear oil on a chain - maybe mix some in to get done when you see the bottle getting light and you're almost done. I'd fire the furnace or head to town before I put anything else in my gas.

Wal-mart's supertech Bar and Chain oil is usually $8.99 in the automotive section. I have used it before and it works just fine. That will be the cheapest, easiest source of bar and chain oil for most people.
