I seen the darnest thing in my neighborhood a couple times now. There's a family who seems to walk the neighborhood on a regular basis with their small dog which is well behaved and inleashed. What floors me is their cat who follows them along unleashed. I never seen anything like that from a cat. Their cat even looks both ways before crossing the street. Has anyone seen such behavior from a cat? I will try to get a pic next time I see them.

I had a cat that would do that. She would walk/follow us through people's yards - not walk right near the dog and I. (These walks often stretched 2 or 3 blocks from our house) She even did it during the winter, bounding through the snow. I don't recommend it though, she had a few close calls with dogs. I got to the point where she stayed in the house while we went for our walk.

That cat was an indoor/outdoor cat we adopted as a stray so she was pretty "streetwise". She was very small but tough as nails.

Lucy does that. She’s from a couple doors down and will follow her caretakers when they walk the dogs. She’s usually 10 or so feet behind on the sidewalk…

My " across the street" neighbor's little dog dog has a stray cat friend - that is afraid of people - and when the neighbor walks the dog, the cat would follow a few feet behined!

I haven't seen the cat since last winter. Scampers was her name.

There is a longer story to this but just not worth the telling.

A neighbor at the condos would walk his Maine Coon unleashed but only within a 75' radius of the front door. The cat liked rolling on concrete.
"The cat liked rolling on concrete." -- I have a Maine Coon and he LOVES CONCRETE!!! SO amazing

Had a Birman cat the ex rescued while living in rural Apple Valley, CA. That cat would walk ahead of us on our daily walks to "clear the path". At one street corner about a block from the house the cat would stop, then start loudly telling us that was as far as she could go to protect us, and if we had any sense we would not proceed. She would sit and wait there until we returned, let us know we cheated death again without her protection, then escort us back to the house.

We had a cat that followed us when walking the dog . He would run past us and then stop until we caught up and then do it again . I think he was teasing the dog on the leash . Went around the block and he disappeared . Was worried he got lost , not so , he was waiting patiently at home :) . Must have cut through the back yards . Him being black and the night benefited his stealth .

Had a cat that used to like coming for walks...but they are very random, stop and inspect everything, and certainly won't come when called. Used to take one down to the beach where we lived...I'd catch rock cod for it, crabs to chase.

My question is which is the smarter cat, one which follows or one which doesn't?

You mean like this!! I take my dogs out for walks 2-3 times a day and my cat comes with us. Dogs are 11 and 13 yrs old and the cat is 14( the small brown one has passed on) but the other 2 are still going strong,, been doing this for quite a while, my neighbors are astonished at this and always make remarks.
