Okay, I have an 05 GLI 1.8T that "requires" 502.00 approved oil. Well, this morning I purchased this Castrol TXT 505.01 from the dealership and changed my oil. Now I am worried that this TXT oil will ruin my engine since it is not 502.00 approved. Should I be worried or could I still use it in my car?

Yes, you can use it in your car.

In that engine, any 0w-30, 5w-30, 10w-30, 0w-40, or 5w-40 syn oil will do.

Preferably, you should use a 0w-30 as it provides excellent protection and has excellent flow in cold temperatures.

GC, Amsoil 0w-30, or Mobil 1 0w-30 are all good choices. However, Mobil 1 0w-40 is the only 502.00 approved oil that I know of, along with Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w-30.

The big fuss with VW is for the extended oil changes that I wouldn't bother with since it leads to sludge.
Use a synthetic and change it more often then the owners manual recommends. If there is room for a larger oil filter, use it.
Here are some 502.00 oils:

Theoretically you should be using a 502.00 oil. The only info I've seen on the TXT 505.01 says that it also meets 505.00. As far as I can tell, none of the 505.01 oils is labelled as meeting 502.00. Honestly - I wouldn't worry too much.

Isn't Volkswagen wonderful?

Id have to guess that its still a decent oil.

Does it claim ACEA A3/B3? If so its a god choice.

If not, reduce your OCI a bit. Either way, dont worry.

Not really a big deal, but I suppose a more relevant question is why did the VW dealership sell you that oil for your 1.8t in the first place? Most VW/Audi dealerships stock the less expensive Castrol Syntec 5W40 which, of coarse, is 502.00 approved. My guess would be that you were either dealing with a rookie parts person or a veteran who was looking for an extra buck.
If it was my car, I'd have no reservations about running the TXT for 5k miles. Keep in mind that Audi requires TXT 505.01 for the RS6, so its not just a VW pump-deuce TDI oil.

You can use VW 500.00,VW 502.00 or VW 505.01 in these VW/Audi gas engines. These specs are simply variations on each other and all are acceptable.

VW 500.00 is the oldest spec, followed by VW 502.00 and then the new VW 505.01. One of the reasons for coming out with 505.01 was to consolidate all these confusing specs. For example, VW 505.01 also meets the older VW 505.00 diesel spec, so it can be used in older TDI's as well as the PD's....

You won't find a formulation that shows only VW 500.00 since it's an older spec. However all VW 505.01 formulations also meet the generic ACEA "A3/B3", as well as VW 500.00/505.00....
