Frank had posted group III oils are now acceptable for clean and rinse of auto rx!! cool. However, i am curious then about using castrol syntech 5w 30 for my rinse. It is a hydrocracked oil, but is it group III with PAO or esters in it? How about its 10w 30? Any info would be great!
thanks!

I second that. Why would you use synthetic oil for an Auto-rx cleaning and rinsing cycles? Two synthetic oil changes in 3500 miles. That can get very expense especially when you also add the cost of Auto-rx. I thought Frank suggested using low cost dino oil for both cleaning and rinsing cycles on the instructions on his web site for best result.

Frank has been letting everyone know here and his forum that group III is acceptable for clean and rinse for those afraid to use dino.... It's just if you don't NEED to, don't waste the money...

The reason, is because hydrocracked isnt synthetic, its still dino oil, thats been cleaned up, it isnt synthetic, like redline, royal purple, older mobil 1, amsoil. Its still a dino oil, too my knowledge. Yes it does state too use dino, especially for rinse, but agian, since Frank suggested group III oils are a green light, i was curious about castrol syntech. One of the recent posts, ome guy pulled the valve cover off, using syntech 5w 50 adn took pics.... no varnish, gum, deposits, or carbon! SO, tah made me think too, why not use syntec, if its a group III, along with auto rx, adn have a totaly spotless engine!
Now, back to original question... is it or is it not group III? contain any POA or esters?
any input appreciated: )

Ziggy I was told once that Castrol 5w30 Syntec uses 100% Slack Wax type GIII (Shell XVHI?) Basestock. However I was told they did not use GI as a carrier. That means most likely the Carrier is Group V POE.

Take any information given in this thread with a grain of salt. Very few people actually know whats in syntec, although many can guess.

I highly doubt syntec just uses a group 3 base. I've heard, and believe, that syntec uses a group 3/4/5 mix. So that's my personal guess.

Any i wouldn't even think about using synthetic with auto-rx.

I had raised this question and was told by Auto-RX that Syntec was fine as a rinse.

I agree that we don't really know for certain that it is all Group III. It could have some Group IV or V and some polar issues with auto rx rinse. But even if it does, the current instructions for ARX rinse are long enough to accomodate.

As for why the heck anyone would do this, well in a Turbo Engine that sees only 4000 miles a year, would you want to leave Dino in for half a year to save $20? That was my context.

ziggy: You DO NOT need to use a synthetic oil (Group III or any other Group for that matter) during an Auto-RX treatment on a Dodge Neon. All you're doing is throwing away $$$. Just use the cheapest SM-rated conventional oil and you'll be fine. Don't overanalyze this.

If you had group 3 in so you want to just add to current batch to run the clean cycle - great. But I can't see running even my dollar PP for a 2000 mi rinse. I'd still use the cheapest SM.
