Castrol Syntec 5W-50, '01 BMW R1100S, 6000 miles

The results below are for a 6000 mile run on Castrol Syntec 5W-50. The air and oil filters are stock and Blackstone did the analysis.

My riding style is fairly relaxed with a typical ride being 100-200 miles out in the country at about 70 mph, and the occasional Italian tune-up.

For comparison I've included results for an earlier run on Mobil 1 15W-50.

Good results with the longer run on Castrol. The only surprise was the low viscosity which does not seem to have had any effect on wear. Oil consumption was noticeably lower with the Castrol.

I refilled with Shell Rotella synthetic and will check up on its performance after 3000 miles.

That is simply an amazing UOA in my opinion. Insolubles seem impossibly low! I will be interested in seeing how the Rotella works for you, I can't see how an oil could do any better though.
 
Good to see someone else running long drains. I'm also curious to see how the diesel oil does.

How much oil did your bike use during the 6000 miles?

What is the specified viscosity for your BMW?

I'm running the red cap M1 in my Triumph Sprint ST, and I'm thinking of going to the rotella T SB 15w-40 since the bike never seems to get much further than a needle width above the cool mark on the temp guage.

Although I was glad to have the 15w 50 in there on a 1000 mile trip in 100+ weather this summer.

In case anyone's interested..in 3k miles I had to add 1/2 quart or a little less.
