Blackstone comments:
Castrol has been using sodium as an additive in their petroleum-based products like the
GTX oil. This is the first time we have seen sodium in one of their synthetics although it is a very low
amount. The TBN for this virgin oil was 10.8 (1.0 is considered low) which measures the amount of
active additive remaining in the oil. The viscosity measured in the correct range for a 5W/40 product.
We think this oil should be suitable for your engine's needs.

The old VOA of Castrol 5w-40 BC for comparison

Castrol Syntec 5w-40 BC

It's the SL/CF ACEA A3/B3/B4-98 502-505 Oil
Iron 4
Aluminum 2
Sodium 13
Silicone 2
Calcium 1287
Magnesium 1118
Phosphorus 939
Zinc 1175

Vi 40c 81
Vi 100c 14.3
Vi Index 184
TAN 2.02
TBN 9.07

The first three 0/5w-40s I found in the VOA section all had flashpoints of 420 or less.

Shell Rotella 410
Motul 300v 415
Mobil 1 0w-40 420

Used oil often has a flashpoint of 375 or less.

I find the additive pack to be a little on the weak side.

For the money I think there are better synthetic 5w40 alternatives.

For us Canadians there aren't many readily available choices though. In fact this is the only 5w40 sold in Canadian Tire up here. And Walmart doesn't even carry 5w40. So you're stuck paying a much higher price for a "boutique" 5w40 at a speed shop.

What about Petro-Canada Duron 5w40? CI-4 Plus and good specs.

But that oil is still not readily available. I've never seen it in Walmart or Canadian Tire. (unless an oil is available in one or both of these places, I don't consider it readily available up here)

0w40 is hard to find here too. Walmart used to carry the Esso XD 0w40 but they stopped that a few months ago. CT carries Rotella 0w40 synthetic, and Amsoil's 0w40 "4 stroke" oil. I believe PartSource has Mobil 1 0w40.

How did the TBN go up when all the additives except for zinc went down?

I've finally found Rotella 5W40 at wallyworld. I haven't really seen it in socal.
Out of the WM oils it's about the only one I'd use in a turbo car.

M1 0W40 is more like a thick 30wt oil.
