My comment was based on the many people on this forum who asked Walmart employees if the product is selling, and the universal response that it is not moving well at all. It was also based on my observations of shelf space allocated to Edge in the last few weeks (shelf space is everything in retail) and my discussions with local Walmart employees (in a fairly affluent area).

Even with only one position for the Edge 5w30 5-quart container and one shelf position for 10w30, I have never seen anything less than a fully stocked shelf at my Walmart for Edge. Meanwhile, they are frequently out of stock or near out of stock on many versions of Mobil 1 at the same store.

Then there is fact that they are dropping the price to $25 from $34 in some locations, and some Walmart's no longer carry it.

Don't get me wrong, I suspect Edge is a very good product, but it was ridiculously priced in 5-quart containers against M1 and Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Also, the fact that they don't have a 5W-20 yet in the US is major mistake IMO for a product launch. People who willing to spend that much money on oil typically have newer cars that spec 5W-20.

Fortunately for me (a BP stockholder) BP made a profit of $25.6 billion in 2008, so wasting $25 million in marketing is less than 1/10 of one percent of their 2008 net profit. They waste a lot more than that on those silly "Beyond Petroleum" ads, as if that increases their profit one iota (it doesn't). Oil companies feel like they have persecuted over the years (there may be some truth to that) and they want to be loved like everyone else, and they believe that money can buy you love.

Oil companies use marketing costs to reduce profits so that the government doesn't get an even bigger tax bite.

As of about 10 min's ago. I have installed and I am now, thinking with my dipstick

It is pretty safe to say that Castrol's marketing program for Edge is not aimed at women.

I'm sure castrol Edge is an excellent oil but at $34 dollars for a 5qt. jug at Walmart it isn't gonna do well. It might do OK at a boutique oil store where the Beemer crowd shop but not at Walmart. IMO it's not $14 a jug better than PP or Synpower. If they had priced it the same as Mobil 1 they might have had a chance. I'll be watching for Walmart to put it on CLEARANCE for $18 or $20 and I'll give it a try otherwise I won't.

They must not think as highly of the public around here, 2 local Wallmarts and not any new fangled Edge oil nor mention of same in sight yet.

They had a separate display in a prominent area in most stores, but now have just very limited shelf space for Edge, and in some stores they don't stock it anymore, so maybe they already removed it before you got there.

Only problem is that Edge only comes in 5w30 or 10w30 (so far)in the US, which I don't believe is the recommended viscosity for BMW or Mercedes.

Edge should be priced the same as Mobil 1 Extended Performance, since they admit it is about the same (unsurpassed by Mobil 1 Extended Performance) and they are both designed for 15K OCI. That would be $28.50 for 5-quart jug.

I bet it will go on clearance very soon in the Walmart I go to. There are a few jugs on the shelf and that's it. I'll buy some if it goes on sale.

No, not a replacement. Syntec is a Group III oil that is meant to sell for less than Edge, although it may not work out that way if they don't start selling any Edge.

Just to give you an up from BP.

I received my coupon from BP good for 1 qt of castrol edge any grade up to the value of $7.99. That was a pretty quick response from bp.

As much as I dislike Castrol, I'll be looking forward to seeing how these oils hold up in actual service.

Maybe you should get out more often. When is the last time you had a date?

No offense, but you missed my point _completely_. I meant that it was most likely going to stay on the shelf. But bravo, that was a wonderful attempt at an insult. Let's get back on topic, because that's what this website is all about.

My Walmart just moved it to a back shelf and red tagged it but the price is still $34. I'll be watching that shelf like a hawk.

I saw a guy stocking the oil isle a week or two ago and asked him if the Edge had been selling well. He said they had only sold a handful of the jugs and none of the quarts. And that was at a store that was the largest in the country until a couple of years ago (may still be, I'm just assuming they've built bigger ones since the last time I saw that stat.)
