It's almost time for an oil change for my E46 M3. I'm wondering if I should go with Castrol or BMW. It would be interesting to compare the VOA for these oils, but I haven't seen one for the BMW oil. If anyone has any comments on this topic, I'd be interested to hear them.

Flip a coin time. Both meet specs. Isn't the BMW oil made by Shell now?

Which one is cheaper? Which one is easier to get? I would use those criteria and then stick with the brand you pick.

The brand fanatics will push their favorite.

Why would it have to be? Castrol TWS 10W-60 is the specified oil for the S54.

Quote:

The following is the only recommended and approved synthetic oil for BMW M (Motorsport) vehicles in the US market with gasoline engines, at the present time.
BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Synthetic Oils for BMW M vehicles equipped with S54, S62, S65 or S85 engines
Castrol EDGE Professional TWS Motorsport SAE 10W-60 Synthetic Engine Oil
BMW part number 07 51 0 009 420
or
Castrol EDGE Professional OE 5W30 Synthetic Engine Oil
BMW part number 07 51 0 037 195

They updated the spec in 2013 I believe.

As as I know, BMW changed the recommendation for the S54 engine from Castrol TWS to the new TwinPower oil made by Shell when the new oil was announced.

I'd stay with the Castrol if your car has been doing well on it.

I bought a case of TWS on Amazon a couple of months ago and it was cheaper than heading to the dealer for the Shell supplied BMW labeled stuff.
