I looked at differences in the viscocity at 100 for m1 and edge. The edge has a much lower visc of any the other 5w30's on the lower end of the 30 range. M1's about avg. Is this good? I know the GC 0w30 is closer to a 40w via this 100 visc measurement so any ideas why edge would use a lower thickness other than maybe fuel economy?

It's not good or bad.

30 weight is a range, and therefore some are going to be higher and lower than others.

What is the application?

Agreed. Good for some and bad for others. I would think in a high stress situation (like towing with a 4 cyl), I would want something a little thicker. But the lower end should be good for daily driving and good fuel economy.

I intentionally water down the 5w30 with 1:3 5w20. especially good in the winter when i will use a group 3 5w30 watered down even thinner with 5w20. mind you, it does get cold here in the winter.
