While browsing Walmart today I noticed Castrol has a new (to me, at least) line of Edge oil, label Edge Euro Car. Only saw it in 5w40, but they still also carried the Edge European Formula in 0w40. Both meet the VW and MB spec that I need, im just wondering if the Euro Car (brown bottle) line is any different then the European Formula (black bottle) that I'm used to. Pics below for reference

0w-40
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 API SN/CF Meets Ford WSS-M2C937-A MB-Approval 229.3/ 229.5 Porsche A40 VW 502 00 / 505 00

5w-40 the "euro car" links to that pds
ACEA A3/B3, A3/B4 API SN/CF BMW Longlife-01 MB-Approval 226.5/ 229.3/ 229.5 Porsche A40 Renault RN0700 / RN0710 VW 502 00/ 505 00

The 5w-40 has additional approvals. Someone else will correct me, but I think that the 5w-40 will be cleaner running.

It won't, it is inferior to 0W40.
0W40 is better oil overall.
LL01 (Renault specs. are nothing special) was updated in 2018 and there is a lot about it to read in Euro section of this forum.

5w40 used to me 229.3 only, 229.5 is news to me
Yes it used to be that the 5W40 was MB229.3 while the 0W40 was the better MB229.5. However this has recently changed and they are now both MB 229.5.

So now it’s harder to say which is “better”. The tradition is to get the 0W40, but who really knows after the recent changes.

There is little difference other than base stocks and the 0w40 would have a cold start advantage in the Antarctic. Both have posted consistent strong UOA's here. The 0w lubes seem to no longer be able to meet LL-01 so if that is of concern to you get the 5w40.

As opposed to the arctic, I presume. :D

Sorry... I couldn't help it. HNY!

In UOA 5W40 has bigger flash point and KV % drop. Not surprising considering base stock.
new version is really, really thin, at 12.8 compared to 13.3 0W40. 5W40 is HC oil, there is nothing special about it and HTHS is probably around 3.6. It is almost 5W30. If performance is imperative, 0W40 is choice.

I missed this "EURO CAR" version coming out and the 0W40 European Formula that I'd stocked up on has gone away.

Now there's the 5W40 EURO CAR made in the USA A3/B4, SN/CF, LL-01, 226.5/229.3/229.5, A40, RN0700/RN0710, 502 00/505 00 ratings.

And 5W30 European Formula made in Austria with A3/B4, SL, LL-01, 229.5, 502 00/505 00 ratings.

Between these two, is the EURO CAR better?
