Carpenter ant bait?

Can you suggest a tried bait product for carpenter ants?

I saw an older post on this, although not specifically for carpenter ants. Most of the info I found on line suggest using a sweet liquid that contains borax, such as Terro. Well, I did buy Terro yesterday. Unfortunately, the ants don't want it. They seem to be staying clear of it.

I will stop by Menards after work today to see what they have. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

The colony is in a large maple tree in front of my house. From there, they venture out into my garage and star to show up in the house as well.

I've tried a few, and if you can find the Gold Box Combat Carpenter Ant Bait stations get them! Put them around the base of the tree. Be sure to only use the bait station and no ant sprays. I also use granular bait that exterminators use, in all honesty if they are in a tree like you said those Combat Bait Stations will wipe them out!!!!!!!!!!!

Just make sure it is the Gold Box and Says for Carpenter Ants. The other bait stations for the smaller ants won't work.

As a side note if you are finding them all around the house, this stuff works very well.

But not to keep repeating myself if you know where they are Combat product is great and a lot less $$$$.

Yeah, I did read this Advance stuff is supposedly very good, but kind of expensive and only seems to be available online.
 
If you know where they are in the tree, pump insecticide into the nest with a pressure sprayer wand inserted as far into the nest as possible and allow it to kill the queen. You'll see them boil out. The ones on your house are scouts and are looking for new sites. Many years ago, my wife opened a silcerware drawer one morning and found that overnight, about 10,000 carpenter ants had moved into the drawer and taken up residence.

Commercial methods for preventing them from walking around use silica gel coated with insecticide. The small sharp particles of silica get into the carapace of the ant and grind holes thorough it and the insecticide kills the ant. Thay avoid this mix like the plague itself!
 
a while back i used a liquid that had borax in it. a sizeable colony was killed in a few days. do not kill any ants, as you want them to bring the poison back to the nest.be liberal with the product. it's safe for inside use. most hardware stores, and home depot sell it.
when the colony is "gone", use some powdered borax around the perimeter of the house, as it will keep them from going back innside. good luck.
 
Fipronil is what's in the gel. You don't need to use much of it as once the ants spreads it in their nest it's over. I've used the Combat gel as well on other ants and it works very well.

I don't know exactly where in the tree the nest is. It's a pretty big tree with no way to climb it really.
 
They must have discontiuned the Carpenter Ant Bait Stations, they came with little spikes to secure the traps to the ground and the box was clearly labeled for carpenter ants. I did not see it on their site.

My buddy had good luck with the gel. I guess I'll be getting more of the Advance Granular bait.
 
I used a product called ADVANCE Carpenter Ant Bait (granular). It contains Abamectin. I got it online and I think it was pretty expensive.. It seemed to work good.
 
You have to see where the ants come and go from and to.

Like a window sill etc.

Have vacuum in hand and suck 'e all up. Probably hundreds of eggs and larve'.

The queen ant is usually miles away.

If you have a nest...you have a problem.

I spent the $ 150.00 on Terminex...he was here for 1 hour...got the whole nest...never an ant ever again.

Do it before they cause more damage!
 
I've used the AMDRO fire ant killer works very well. Amdro ant blocker should work as well. For out door usage in large doses I'd go that route.

Terminex if they do spray the whole area could be using fipronil in large area mass. It's not something I would want in my yard. Reason to use the gel in small amounts and wash it down the next day...if you need to start over place more gel bait but use limited amount to attack the colony.

Fipronil is controversial....
 
Out of all the products mentioned, AMDRO Ant Block was the only one that I was able to find. Hydramethylnon is the active ingredient in it. Not sure if it's as effective as fipronil, but probably less toxic to other species.

I just distributed it around the tree. We'll see later tonight if they bite.
 
Well, it appears they're not liking AMDRO either. They just walk over the granules. They don't pick it up and don't carry it. Sigh...

What time is it when you checked....ants are most active in the early morning hours looking for food.
 
About 11 pm. They were there. It just looked like they weren't interested in it... maybe it takes a while for them to figure out it's food...
