Problem on the high seas.
Was going from Yokohama, JP to Oahu, HI.
Radioed yesterday a significant fire, with intent to abandon ship.
Conditions when first life raft entered water: 30MPH winds, 17ft waves.
Current news is 16 rescued, 2 missing, 3 feared dead. Currently adrift.

Involved in the search to date:

- Two Air Station Barbers Point HC-130 Hercules aircrews
- A Navy 7th Fleet P-8 Poseidon aircrew
- Crew of the Green Lake
- Crew of the SM Eagle
- Crew of the New Century 1
- Crew of the Venus Spirit
- Crew of the Genco Augustus

Wonder what the cause of the fire is?

The news is pretty sketchy even on the second day. I was trying to find what make of cars it was carrying. I also wondered if Hawaii was the actual final destination or another port on the west coast.

Sad to hear this. Whenever I've been tasked with search and rescue it's always more intense and somber on the aircraft, even more than our combat sorties. I hope all are found alright but those conditions are tough.

Personally the fire would have to be awfully bad for me to abandon ship in those conditions.

Looks like substantial damage to the port side.

That is pretty bad. The hull above is thinner than the blue part below. I see they raised the stern section. Maybe to jettison vehicles before they caught fire and exploded?
