Cannot Fill Up Gas Tank

This is on my wife's 2004 Nissan Sentra, she cannot fill up the tank fully. The automatic shut-off nozzle stops and then a gurgling sound happens and then gas begins to run out of the filler neck. After we managed to get in 1.5 gallons of gas, with probably .05 gallons of gas leaking out, we left.

After the ride home I got out and removed the fuel tank cap and I heard a gurgling sound, and I could see down the filler neck that the fuel level rose slightly but then stopped and no gas spilled out. So I put the cap back on and left it alone.

I came back out a couple of hours later (temperature was then near 80+ F) and removed the cap again, and I was greeted with the gurgling sound followed by gas spilling out the filler neck. I put the cap back on and left it alone.

Anyone have any ideas on this?

From the forums I read, not necessarily Sentra forums, others are saying this is due to EVAP clogging. Does anyone know if that is correct?

Thanks in advance.

There's also usually a rollover ball valve where the filler meets the tank. If that jams I can see fuel not making it in.

Take a look to see if your filler hose has a smaller, 1/2" diameter vent hose next to it that ends just under the unleaded restrictor flap thing. If you can fill the tank on the slowest pump setting, perhaps it's going in through this vent hose and the EVAP system instead of the usual way.

Also possibly, just possibly, this is covered under a lengthy EPA emissions warranty or some sort of recall.

This happened when filling at the slowest possible speed as well. I will check the vent hoses next chance I get.

We never had this problem before, and no one has messed with the underside of the fuel tank where the lines are located. That should rule out the lines being pinched.

Any chance of FP60 dissolving gunk in the fuel tank and it clogging the EVAP canister?

No it's always been filled to until the shut off nozzle stops.

The service manual shows that the gas goes from the filler neck to the tank, and there are two vent tubes that go on the top side of the filler neck. Then the tank connects out into the lines that lead to the EVAP and engine.

So how exactly would anything have gotten into the EVAP canister?
