The Canadians do a **** of a lot better in some areas than we do in military effectiveness(training, etc), and it looks like things will be heating up in the Arctic. Time to support and learn from our neighbors (and not just ASW).

Global warming leaves more open the estimated 1/4 of untapped world petro reserves as the Arctic ice recedes.

Have a look at the guy who bought the port of Churchill for $7 nine years ago.

Mid-continent Russia to Monterey, Mexico via rail to Murmansk, across the sea to Churchill, and then to points south.

A whole new way of looking at the world.

Geophysical changes in the Artic and subartic areas will have an incredible impact on commerce, trade and geopolitical issues. Once the Northwest passage is open due to the thinning and retreating ice cover, we better get ready for some serious tensions. The Canadians regard the current Northwest Passage as Canadian territory, the USA regard it as international waters. We shall see how this conflict of interests plays out (some of us may live long enough). Either way, thinking ahead and preparing for infrastructure like harbors, pipelines, roads and rail, is certainly in order.
