I have talked to many mechanics about motor oil that say that when you start using Pennzoil in a car then you cannot switch to another brand because it will screw up your engine if you do.
Then I move away to another area and the oil change people say that this is just not the case and they have never had a problem after someone switched from Pennzoil to another brand of oil.
I have googled this and have not found anyone either saying that this is or is not the case so has anyone here heard this?

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard. Of course you can switch to another brand. What exactly did they say would happen? Do they think your engine will instantly explode when you pour another brand in?

ALL oils, no matter WHAT the brand, are fully 100% compatible and you can switch brands or even mix brands together and NOTHING bad will EVER happen.

Use a good quality sm oil of the correct weight and rest assured you will have no problems... There are a number of excellent oils out there Pennzoil is one of them

the (false) original theory probably is that Pennzoil will cause all kinds of nasty deposits and once you switch to another oil it will cause all of those deposits to release and clog everything up.

to BITOG!

Oils are formulated specifically to prevent them from causing problems when you switch. The absolute worst that can happen is that you will have a few thousand miles when oil consumption is slightly higher and protection is slightly lower than normal. Most of the time, there are no problems at all. This goes for any product from any brand, not just Pennzoil.

Sad but true.

I completely agree. I swear, their are more myths about motor oil than any other topic on the planet.

Your mechanic needs to go to school and learn about oils and not sleep during that class. I stay with the same type oil. I use full synthetic oil and I switch brands with no problems. There are many very good brands and you need to read some UOAs and chose the one that you have faith in.

hey guys thanks for your responses, I signed up for this forum because I just started a new job at a garage and one of the things we do on the side is lubrications and oil changes.

The mechanic that told me this information is not dumb, he is a well accomplished mechanic that can do every type of work on a car/truck/bus imaginable and he does an A+ job.

But he is not the only person that says switching from Pennzoil will destroy your engine, my wife who comes from Pennsylvania a few states away from where I grew up understood this to be fact before we met as well as everyone I know from my home town that was taught by their Dad on how to change their oil but when I moved away to another region of the USA and got my job I told some of my coworkers when a car rolled in for a oil change "wait, hold on this guy was using Pennzoil and we are putting in something else that will mess up his engine, we need to tell him this" and they are like "What? are you insane? nobody has ever come back demanding we buy them a new engine because switching from Pennzoil blew it up"
I guess now it it makes sense, if it was true they would surely be required by law to make this known somewhere on each quart of oil they sell.
