can you run a filter "TO BIG"?

I've been thinking about running the 1.3" taller PL20195 on my toyota v6. But can you actually have a filter "TO BIG"? As in, the oil pump can't keep up with it at idle? That's the only concern I have with running a larger oil filter. I don't wanna lose oil pressure or somin at idle.

No you can't run an oil filter "to big", but you can run one that's too big.

Not for any reason like that though. The oil filter size doesn't affect the oil pressure or the oil pump. It will increase fill up time, if you have a bad ADBV and/or don't fill the filter that is.

yes, my grammer was incorrect. lol. The only thing holding me back from running a "taller" filter on my toyota is i'm worried at idle the pump won't keep up with the larger filter. But the engineering side of me says... it has to. It might take longer to "fill", but once it's filled the pump shouldn't notice a difference. and yes, if I do notice a lower PSI then it's flowing more. b/c my sending unit is inbetween the pump and filter. but yet on the older toyotas they call for MUCH larger filter, but then in the late 80's they switched to most toyotas using this "small" filter. b/c my 1984 2.8L 6cyl Supra calls for a HUGE filter stock. but the later supras call for a smaller filter b/c of fitment issues. and most companies stopped making that old larger filter, so they'll call for the new small one. Eh, screw it. if I can fit it... i'll run it.

As long as the bypass is OK, do it. Remember, engines move around a little. Leave clearance from things that don't move.

I went from a Purolator L14670 which is 3.75 inches long and 3.70 inches wide to a Puroaltor L30001 which is 5.14 inches long and 3.78 inches wide. So far so good.

So you shouldnt have a problem as long as it clears everything.

yeah, i'm only going 1.3" taller. same diam. I think in the later 80's Toyota just spec'd 1 filter for all the motors. 22R/3VZ/7m/7mgte etc. B/c toyota is notorious for making 1 part fit 999 cars/motors. So if my 1984 Supra had a "Monster" filter.... and then they up and overnight spec a tiny filter for it now... gotta tell ya somin. b/c the filter originally on my '84 supra is still Way bigger than the larger one I wanna use. So going a tad taller shouldn't hurt it. Ok, I just wanted to double check.... Don't wanna make my decision on a whim.

Keep in mind that at least some filter mfgrs don't use the same filter media in all their filters. Wix for example uses a media which filter better in the FL-400 equiv filter than it does in the FL-1A equiv.

Well Like I said, makes ya wonder why in the early 80's toyota had all these individual filters for each motor, varying in size. Then up and pretty much overnight (1988 I think) They started specing 1 filter for a ton of engines.

1984 Supra "factory size filter":
Height: 4.338"
Diameter: 3.66"

The filter that is "now" listed for it:
Height: 3.404"
Daimeter: 2.921"

Wix is the only company left I think that still makes that larger toyota filter. Purolator calls for the later model smaller filter.
