can u get a reliable used car for under $3k anymore?

Anytime you buy an order vehicle if the previous owner has stretched the oil changes to very high mileage between each oil change there's a possibility that the rings on the Pistons have carboned up to the extent that they don't prevent it from burning a lot of oil. So that's a big concern.

Toyota had a batch of engines called 2az-fe that were really notorious for having the Rings not seal properly and causing them to burn a lot of oil. I think what it boils down to is they designed the piston rings to not have a lot of friction by being low force between the piston ring and the cylinder wall but they went a bit too far on this one and it ended up being a very serious oil burning problem. They even had a recall on it. It really happened a lot when people didn't change the oil often. But as far as I know the Yaris does not have that engine. You can look up Toyota oil burning engines on Google or look up Toyota 2az-fe oil burning and you can find a list of the models and years that those models had that engine and avoid those. Especially when buying used because it may be outside the extended warranty repair interval. Just something to be aware of.

So a bit off topic - but why is this 528i only $3500. Does no one want these for some reason? 4 cylinder turbo a dud or?
Looks like that particular used car dealership buys a lot of used luxury labels at auction, puts a small markup on them and flips them without putting another dime in the cars. Most of their inventory is <$4000. A lot of their one star reviews say they don't even clean them, basically they only clear the engine trouble codes with a scanner!

A dirt cheap car can end up being pretty darn expensive. $3K is a crap shoot at best, I'm sorry to say.
I recently paid $6000 for a low mileage 2005 Corolla S (top of the line) that is throwing a transmission trouble code.
This was a sub $3K car not so long ago...

If you can't DIY, there was no reliable $3k car for a long, long time now.
Yeah, if you can watch some youtube and do some simple stuff, maybe a 05 to11 Focus? That isn't rusted structurally. I know zero about the atx but the mtx is ok, and it seems the brake lines don't rust, my AC still works at 80%. Eats motor mounts, and mine have needed the blower fan done on them, but the heater core seems to hold together as does the rest of the cooling system. The thermostat is no fun to replace though...
I do agree with the thought that if you are stretching for a $4-5k car and can't DIY most things, you should try not to have one at all. Do some neighborhood scouting and hopefully you can find one that has got everything you want within walking or transit distance.

Down here in the Houston area, there are still sub $3K cars .

Dependability is still in question though.

Example : 2003 Buick Century for $1,400 with 90k miles on it.

I get the impression the price listed is what they expect for a down payment. Looking at the listings, a 2015 Hyundai for $2300????

https://www.facebook.com/marketplac...f=marketplace_profile&referral_code=undefined

The money listed is what they want for a down payment.

This place is a BHPH that is hoping to get you in and get your down payment money.

It's a bag full of red flags when I look at the listings.

And yes, after digging. Click on the "see more"

Gotta be careful in this (or any) space as the real price of the vehicle is not clear. Trying to sucker someone in listing the down payment as the price of the vehicle.

You have to be able to fix them to make cheap cars work out.

I had a $3500 Fusion that I spent $50 on a junkyard rack, plus a $100 for alignment. It was a great car. But a real mechanic would have charged a lot to replace the rack with a new or rebuilt unit.

I have a $3000 Prius that has been pretty good so far ...

My Volvo was about $3500 but that was circa 2018 ish. I have worked on it quite a bit over the last 75,000 miles.
