Hi. Can anyone tell me in what application can I use SAE 80 gear oil in my '98 Land Rover Discovery? Is it ok for the gear box or diffs? Transfer Case?
I have a few boxes of Spectro SAE 80 and SAE 85 'Transmission/Gear Lube' that i would like to use up.
Thank you.

What is the manufactures recommendation?

MTF94 is 75w80 GL4.
If your 80w is GL4 then you can use where MTF94 is indicated (R380 gearbox). If you have transfer and rear diff usually it requires GL5, check manual.

Most manual transmissions are ok with gl-4
Hypoid gears need gl-5

This brings us to why subaru MT need gl-5.. its shared sump MT+ front diff with hypoid gearing.

As mentioned it sounds possibly usable in the gearbox(MT?)
but probably not in the front or rear diffs.

There are some rare exceptions.

they fat fingered and put G instead of Type F for the LT77/Rover 380 transmission. now it’s 75W80 MTF94

diffs knuckles and transfer case is EP90

Thank you. Spectro advise the SAE80 is neither GL4 or GL5. What makes a GL spec oil? Just curious.
