Can I take an oil sample by using oil in the filter?

Good idea? Bad idea? Just wondering, as it would be easier to just change filters than drain from the pan without wasting oil at an upcoming 5K UOA.

Very bad idea. If you did already, I wouldn't bother sending it off. Look into the Fumoto drain valve. I'm going to order one myself. I had one before. They are excellent. Made very well and makes life a lot easier....because my life is just so hectic and complicated with all this oil mess.

You don't say why it is bad.

I'd guess you may get mopre insoluble/particulates in an oil filter sample, but most everything should be suspended in the oil, so as long as the oil was hot and well-mixed, I dont see the issue.

The best way to take a sample that is accurate would be from the stream of oil pouring out of the engine, not from the oil pan or filter.

Yea-bad idea. First its not a representative sample. Second when you pour the oil out you will get some oil pouring out of the space on the outside of the filter media and insolubles may come with it.
