I am replacing oil in a Cat 85 transmission. 50W will meet the recommendations for summer use (95degrees). However this is a little heavy for winter use. Can I mix 30 and 50? I will use Chevron oil. Is there another option?

BTW 40W has to be special ordered and would be hassle. Trying to use oils that I keep on hand.

Usually 30w is fine for summer use if it is a to-4 rated fluid. It just depends on what your service manual calls for. I would not mix the two weights if it was me. If you want better flow in the winter with a sae-50 tranny oil then go with Amsoil full synthetic tranny hydraulic oil if your manual will allow it. That is a excellent product.

no problem with mixing same brand 30 and 50. The overlap in operating temps usually work, but not always. Here I have to use a 60wt TO-4 sometimes

Thanks for the responses. I am using Chevron drive train oil and not Cat oil.

Does blending the two at 50/50 make a 30W50 multi-viscosity oil, or does it make 40W?
