Can German Castrol 0w30 Cause Sluggishness Over Mobil1 10w-30 ?

Not sure if this is just in my head but since switching to GC 0w-30 coupld days ago over Mobil1 10w-30 which I ran previously the car seems to be more sluggish in its operation. I know GC has more hot viscosity, is there anything else between the oils that could result in this feeling. My engine has balance shafts down around the oil pan, and there isnt any windage tray either on this engine. I just think the engine was a bit more eager to rev when it was running Mobil1 10w-30, perhaps it has less friction compared to GC. Any opinions or thoughts on this. Lastly I could just be dreaming all this up as well, dunno.

Well, all I can give is the stats on the oils. I will let the experts elaborate on them. We do know that the GC is on the thick side of a 30w and the M1 is on the thin side. I have experienced the same thing when going from M1 10w30 to Amsoil 10W30 on my spouse's car. Switched back to M1.

GC 0w30 cSt 40c=68.5 cSt 100c=12.2

M1 10w30 cSt 40c=62 cSt 100c=10

thanks, yeah that looks like a big difference in viscosity, my engine also has oil squirters for the underside of the pistons and an oil cooler, not sure if they are affected by oil viscosity.

I keep thinking about that Quaker State commercial where Rick Hendrick from Hendrick Motorsports reports that Quaker state has reduced friction levels by a certain percentage in their oils and he needs that extra edge in his racing motors for more hp etc....., wonder how much difference there really is in friction control between different oils. I guess one way to affect friction is through viscosity.
 
I replaced the Mobil 1 10W30 with GC 0W30 in my S-10 and haven't noticed any difference other than a slight increase in mileage.
 
I noticed a substaintal difference between a 30 wt and a 20 wt in my Mazda 6s. (3.0 V6) The 30 wt felt sluggish...like the car was having to push through something to get somewhere.
 
I switched from mobil 1 5w30 to GC in my 4 cyl camry.......and I really can't tell a difference.

Probably it is not your imagination.
I remember a few years ago when i was using a 10W40 and switched to mobil 1 15W50 .
It felt a little sluggish in the first 500 miles but after that the performance was way better.
It must be something really nice in their formula

In both of my cars, GC is a thicker oil at operating temp than what used to be in them, but in both cases the engines feel like they've got more low end and midrange power.

My guess is that it's either the higher viscosity of GC or it's not as friction modified as M1. Redline made my engine run smoother then any other oil. ASL/M1 are about the same.
 
well I decided to remove the GC and I saved it for use in my other vehicles that likely need the extra visc. . I've gone back to Mobil1 10-30 (4 qts) with a quart of Redline added to the mix

. I got the go-ahead from Dave at Redline so what the heck, might as well try this experiment.

I can definitely notice a difference in back to back runs of GC and Mobil1, the Mobil1 seems to free the motor up where GC felt sluggish.

speaking of difference betwwen GC and M1..If the thickness of GC over M1 10W-30 is to blame for power loss how would you explain this then?

M1 0W-40 produces more power then lighter weight GC 0W-30???

I cant comment on the HP tests, but it didnt surprise me to find them ranking Amsoil as #1 oil with the sponsorship clearly displayed.

The HP tests could likely be correct, I think it comes down to friction modifiction of the different oils. Royal Purple has often been listed as having positive effects on HP, there was a test in Hot Rod magazing a year or so ago where some muscle car gained a large amount of power after they swapped Royal Purple fluids in the engine and tranny and diff. I guess its possible if the friction levels are different.
