the racket is deafening!

Yep, that was a very common issue on the 1998-2004 Isuzu 3.2/3.5L, which is a very different engine from the 1992-1997 3.2L. When my SIL owned her 2003, a few times I checked the oil to find NOTHING showing on the stick! OTOH, my 2002 didn't consume anything notable. I was always 'experimenting' with oils then though. Early BITOG days.

No one knows...

Leon's answer was better..

Holden: but it can't. Not without your help ...and you're not helping.
Leon: What do you mean I'm not helping?!!
Holden: I mean you're not helping. Why is that, Leon?

Turned out it was a bent valve, possibly caused by a worn rocker arm? He's still driving it, and it sounds worse every day... but he's planning on replacing the engine instead of getting this one fixed and worked over. Probably be cheaper in the long run, anyway... but I'm just waiting to see him sitting along side the road at the end of an oil slick after that sucker snaps and drops into the chamber...

I can actually picture this.

Yeah, if it's Dunkin Donuts & coffee I am there...

Hmmm.. quite the unusual prognosis for this engine given it's; SOHC, hydraulic lash adjusters and non-interference. They do have a funky rocker arm setup given one cam per head has to actuate 4 valves per cyl. I used to be quite the Isuzu Rodeo enthusiast and followed forums on them for a few years. Never heard of this type of problem with a 1992-1997 Isuzu 3.2L. They went to DOHC, shim/bucket lash adjustment in 1998+.
