Camshaft Position sensor relearn?

Hi folks,

Is there something called a camshaft position sensor relearn? I have a 2015 Focus with the 1.0L 3cyl engine and my car won't start. I pulled the CELs and I got the codes below. I verified that I'm getting fuel and spark just in case. Luckily I'm at my mom's and not stranded on the highway. Unluckily I'm 600 miles away from home, dealerships aren't open on Sunday and the sensor has to be special ordered at parts store. Some of the sensors listed online at AAP and NAPA have a note: you may need to perform a camshaft sensor relearn. I can't find anything about this online.

Just for an anecdote: I turned the car on this morning to come back home and it started up just fine, nothing out of the ordinary. I go inside and say my goodbyes, come back out, and noticed the car turned itself off.

I don't know of any camshaft position sensor relearn, but newer cars could be different.

I only replaced a camshaft position sensor once, and that was due to a leaking O-ring. No relearn was required.

What's that garbled code at the end of your post? :D :alien:

yes, the relation between camshaft and crankshaft can be relearned on modern engines. this has been a thing for 10 years or more, but isn't often necessary. More likely after a cambelt or camchain change.

Look up the correct procedure though, can be it needs a hot engine as the expansion of the block and head will be different to the one from the belt or chain.

All that said, it's not a good sign that yours would be out of spec out of the blue...

My 1995 Escort a few times would give me a CEL if the camshaft position sensor wire harness piece wasn't plugged in completely right. Normally this happened after I unplugged it to get it out of the way to do something else (like change the fuel filter???). It otherwise ran fine and the fix was to unplug it and plug it back in.

I don't see it listed in the FSM as being required, but I'm sure there is a procedure to do it in the IDS. It does show a "Misfire Monitor Neutral Profile Correction" procedure that must be done when replacing the crank sensor.

Thanks. I left the focus at my mom's place and took their spare car home. I'll get the two camshaft position sensors ordered and go back to replace them. Hopefully there isn't anything else that's needed.

I have had CPS issues on an old Saab 8-5. Replacement of the part without the need for a relearn fixed intermittent starting issues and slow starting issues

I recall having to run the vehicle up to 65MPH then letting completely off the gas and let the car slow to 40mph a couple times.
for a relearn but unsure it that was crank or cam p.s. relearn.

Thanks folks. Replaced the sensors and still doesn't fire up. I'm 99% sure the exhaust cam skipped a tooth or the rubber timing belt just completely broke. It's not a common failure on these engines but it's the most common catastrophic failure apparently. I'm having a dealer inspect the car to confirm that and I think I'm just going to get rid of the car if my fears hold true.
