I had some questions concerning the Cold Cranking Viscosities.
Topic: Schaeffer's 5W-30 vs 10W-30

The issue was that the 5W-30 was inferior to the 10W-30 and 15W-40 Blends . The guy at Schaeffer's said that that value (for the 5W-30) should have been at -30C. But later I noticed that the value for the 5W- is supposed to be listed at -25. So much for that info.

The guy did tell me that all 3 oils had about the same percentage PAO and Group I oil. So it looks to me than that the 10W-30 is the way to go. As it should be more shear resistant. I guess

Al,
Had the same questions for Schaeffer's about their 5W-30 Blend #701. After befuddling their customer service rep he passed me to a "chemist". He confirmed that the correct cold cranking viscosity for the 701 is 5,073 @ -30*C. Their web site is wrong as listing it @ -20*C. By the way, -30*C is correct for 5W-XX oils classed under the GF-3 system. The old rating for 5W-XX was -25*C. For a 10W-XX oil the new rating is based upon -25*C.

Al, the Schaeffer's 10W-30 Synthetic Blend uses group II+ and PAO not group I. The 5W-30 Synthetic Blend uses group III and PAO. Patman said he called Schaeffer's and was told that the tech data sheet for the 5W-30 Synthetic Blend was wrong and they use group III not group II+.

Sounds like it all depends on which day of the week you call and who you talk to . The guy corrected me when I suggested that there was group III and PAO. He said Group I in all three oils.

So far I am pleased with 10W-30 (why wouldn't I be

)

I have already checked my milage with the 10W-30 and so far It does better than the 5W-30 Moly Pure Synthetic. Too early to tell though.

Al,
For 5W-XX the new max cp @ -30*C is 6,600 cP. I don't know how it relates to the old -25*C max cp of 3,500 cP. As it stands now the new 10W-XX oil has a CCS(cold cranking simulator) of 7,000 cP @ -25*C. For the 5*C drop in testing I don't know how it compares or relates to the max cP previously or when comparing 10W vs 5W.

Does anyone know what Schaeffer's really is,so far i've read that 5w30 is a group 2 plus and 10w30 is a group 2,now i just read that they are all group 1,be nice to know.Thanks

I wasn't the one to call Schaeffer Oil, I got that info from BOB himself, as he spoke to Schaeffer Oil's head chemist. That right there is solid info you can take to the bank.

Patman,I have a 2000 LS1,I have been using Schaeffer's 10w30,do you think I would be better with the 5w30,or what about the 15w40.Thanks.ADRIAN

I think the 5w30 would probably be better, since it seems to be a little bit thicker at 100c than the 10w30. As far as the 15w40 goes, Terry Dyson talked me out of using this viscosity in my LT1, as he said the chemistry of the 5w30 and 10w30 was better for my engine.
