Excuse the dirty surface I was working on and debris-- it didn't come from the engine, noticed no metal flakes or anything unusual inside any of the filter pleats.
Exhibit A: Mobil1 filter that came off a 2014 Sierra 5.3L, probably around 8K service. Baseplate holes made it clear it was Purolator made. I don't think the metal core should be showing through the filter medium. I didn't manipulate the media in any way for the photo.
Exhibit B: Champion COS3593A filter used on a 2007 Kia Sorento 2.7L V6 for about 7-8K. I've cut these apart before and never had any issues, the $1 something I got them for on Rockauto closeout, well worth the money. No drama is what I like. If there's only one photo, I deliberately shot the side w/ worst pleat spacing.
Exhibit C: Fram Force (xx12060?) --used on my '18 Tour-X. Have to say I'm embarrassed that I bought this. It came from one of the Chain stores (O'Reilly perhaps) with an oil change deal. I thought Fram's worst days were behind them, but this is they typical crap they sold 15+ years ago. Cardboard end caps, very little & cheap filter medium. Sad thing is, this was their mid-tier offering which came with synthetics. I feel bad for the folks that got the lower end Fram filter when they bought convention oil & filter combo. Probably same thing w/ nitrile ADBV instead of silicone.
Exhibit D: Kawasaki OEM filter that came with my new zero-turn. Engine model is FR730V, filter only had 5 hours on it. Looks like a stout filter, pleat spacing was almost magical. I replaced it w/ a oversized filter I had (Fram PH16 size) with a 3/4-16 thread that had similar specs. I might go back to OEM after seeing this.
