Here is a great article that I received from Amsoil the other day.

You can see Bypass filtration combined with superior synthetic oil can dramatically extend oil drains.

I believe this will become even more important with the new Diesel Oil specs and Government Regulations on emissions for 2007 and beyond made Diesel Engines.

Enjoy.

"A recent article in Today’s Trucking, a
Canadian publication, featured Dallas,
Texas-based fleet Stevens Transport.
Stevens is a refrigerated TL carrier with
1,600 trucks, mostly Kenworths and
Peterbilts, all with Cat C15 engines.
Stevens’ fleet of trucks is on 200,000-mile
drain intervals, and the fleet’s maintenance
management team is confident the extended
drains are safe and not harming engine life.

Previous Practices

Stevens had been changing oil and filters
approximately every 30,000 miles, or five
to six times a year. In 2003, Eric Smith,
director of maintenance at Stevens, began
looking at by-pass filtration as a way to
lower costs.

The Evaluation Process

Stevens let the first truck it tested go 70,000
miles before its first drain. Stevens then
moved the second test truck to 140,000
miles with good results. The third test truck
went 192,000 miles before oil analysis
results suggested it was time for a change.
After more than a year of testing, the company
began changing its entire fleet over to
the new system.

Old News

Over the years, drastically extended drain
intervals have become commonplace at
AMSOIL. The teardown of trucker Haywood
Gray’s Mack engine after it went 409,000
miles without an oil change is just one
example that was heavily documented and
publicized by AMSOIL.

Superior Motor Oil

The key to extending drain intervals is the
oil you use. AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil
was the first extended drain motor oil on the
market. AMSOIL Motor Oils are more
resistant to breakdown, so they last longer
than other motor oils. Kept clean, AMSOIL
motor oils will cool, clean and reduce friction
and wear for the best possible fuel
economy and the longest possible engine
life, for the longest drain interval possible.

Superior Filtration

When used in conjunction with AMSOIL
Synthetic Motor Oils, AMSOIL Ea Filters
provide protection that can’t be beat.
AMSOIL Ea By-Pass Filters remove 98.7
percent of contaminants as small as two
microns. They also remove 39 percent of
soot particles down to one micron.
AMSOIL Ea Air Filters are made with
nanofiber synthetic media that is available
only from AMSOIL. Ea Air Filters boast
the highest efficiency rating of any air filter
on the market, along with greater capacity
and less restriction than competing filters.
AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters also are the most
efficient filters on the market. They have significantly
lower restriction than conventional
cellulose media filters and have a far
greater capacity than competing filter lines.

Oil Analysis is Key

AMSOIL provides motor oils with guaranteed
extended drain capabilities, and AMSOIL
Ea Filters provide unsurpassed filtration performance.
The key to extending drain intervals
even further is the use of oil analysis."

There are a lot of CTD guys running bypass filters...Gary (the TP man) has a several hundred post thread on TDR...and I read about them on almost all of my diesel boards that I am a member of...

They tend to be mainly a diesel thing from what I see...of course I don't frequent many boards other than diesel sites...

I posted this on another thread and I will try to copy and paste here since it pertains to Stevens Transport.

What do you guys think of this?

"And just what type of oil are the good folks at Stevens using? If they are using Delvac 1300, Delo 400, or Shell Rotella T (all 15W40's), I think they are nuts."

"I agree. They use Amsoil."

Well, this really had me thinking so I sent an email to Mr. Eric O. Smith, Director of Maintenance & Equipment, Stevens Transport Inc., Paragon Leasing, LP & Alliance Leasing Inc.

My email to Mr. Smith at 5:30 PM on Feb. 13th

"Mr. Smith: A friend of mine told me that you are doing 200,000 mile oil changes on your trucks. Would you mind telling me what kind of oil you are using."

Mr. Smiths reply to me at 10:25 AM, Feb. 14th

"Johnny: It's not the oil that we are using, it is the Oil Purification System that we install on our tractors that allows us to extend the drain intervals, which are determined by oil analysis. To get some good information about the system, contact Terry Norton at OPS at 330-655-0862 or 330-310-8983. Their website is www.oilpursys.com "

My email back to Mr. Smith at 11:03 AM, Feb. 14th

"Mr. Smith: Thank you for your reply. Would you mind telling me what type and weight of oil you are using?"

Mr. Smiths reply to me at 11:07 AM, Feb. 14th

"Johnny: Pennzoil 15W40"

Sorry, but after finding this out I just wanted to set the record straight.

Im Sorry, but I find it difficult to believe that ANY oil could last 200,000 miles. How can the active additives fight oxidation and nitration over this amount of miles and time? Anyone in the UOA industry have any data to suggest this could be true? Or, anyone have a theory on how this could be done? I have a few!

I just told you one possibility. The filter is service on an unknown schedule ..the consumption is greater and you may indeed exchange the sump several times in that 200k miles.

No ..I don't sell the things. But I think when you're saying no oil can last that long ..I think that you're right. Most of it may not be the same oil.

..and who says anyone "believes" it ..I just don't reject the possibility. I'm a lubrication agnostic. I can neither prove nor disprove the assertion.
