So I decided that the Trans Am was going to get an oil change and a top end clean today.

I literally stood in the oil isle at Walmart for about 10 minutes, trying to figured out what the [censored] to buy.

Do I go with Synthetic or not? After all the Corvette requires Synthetic but it says nothing about Synth in my manual unless it's really cold out? What the heck GM it's the same exact engine!

10w-30 or 5w-30? Manual says I can run both. But people on the internet have said they run 15w-50 all the time!

OK, so I can get PP for less than 6 quarts of Maxlife 10w-30. But then again, I have over 120K on the car, so the extra additives in the Maxlife would be better.

But PP is a full synthetic, Maxlife is just a blend.

What about just plain old dino? I can save money and it will probably be fine. But I want above average protection for this motor. Especially on startup.

Mobil1 has high mileage full synthetic now!! But Mobil1 isn't what it used to me, isn't it?

Do I run some Gunk engine flush through it or not? Manual says not to but other people have with no problems. Wonder if it would help this ticking noise I have?

LOL, that was literally my thought process for 10 minutes. Ultimately I went with Maxlife 10w-30 since I've seen nothing but good things about it and it had an awesome UOA on our Outback. I also ran some Gunk motor flush through it first. Used Chrysler foaming top end cleaner through the intake and Seafoam in the gas. Seems to have cleaned up the motor alot. Idles much better. BITOG has given me oil buying anxiety!!!!

Lucky for me I am a stick in the mud and have run very little except Pennzoil YB since it came in cans. I mostly stick to owners manual, although I have retrofitted my 77 truck to 5W-30.

That was my last fill, but I wanted a high mileage oil, but I didn't want to try Mobil 1 again. Gah!!!!!!!

Oh I realize PP is a great oil. I've seen the UOA. Especially Patman's. I don't know what was going through my head at the time. I'm happy with picking Maxlife, I know it's a good oil. I was just playing tug of war with myself of which oil is "best" for the money and also gives good protection.

Yup, there's nothing like taking peyote, forgetting two or maybe three full days of your life, and coming to in the oil aisle of a Wal Mart... crying in frustraion.

We've all been there. That's why were here.

If you have weeping I'd go maxlife or M1HM. Otherwise PP/M1/SynPower. I'd go 5w-30 in PA.

You know what's stupid? On Mobil's website, put in a 2002 corvette. It recommends Mobil 1. Put in a 2002 TransAm, it says you can run regular conventional. IT'S THE SAME ENGINE!!! So which is it? I should run the synth because it is a corvette engine, or run the dino, because its "just a Firebird"?? Stupid GM

It's very easy for me, my buying process is simple: whatever brand name is on sale with/without rebate for close to zero out of pocket is my oil. Lately I didn't buy any except FAR Peak and Proline oil filter at PepBoys abiut 3-4 months ago.

It's my understanding in the 90"s Vette discontinued the oil cooler when they changed body styles. Thats when they went with M1 because it met the new higher heat standard Vette spec. 4718, so they could do away with the cooler. Not enough room under the hood. Correct me where I'm wrong.Never owned a Vette.
Also you seem to like the Maxlife so why are you having doubts about it now?

So true. Talk about obsessive compulsive. Ive lightened up recently and think ones OCI is a bigger factor than the type of oil.

Corvette due to body design/space restrictions removed the oil cooler thus requiring synthetic or ya burn it up.

Fire Chicken has all the bit thus not required.

Yeah, I keep finding myself trying new oils because of this place...lol.

When I switch from M1 to PP this fall.(the M1 is still too clean to change, even after 3k of pure city driving), it will be the 3rd oil change of new oil that this car will be getting. The Balt is now doing so well on the M1 now, I almost feel bad that i'm changing it to PP. I'll be very interesting to see how the PP holds up to a Michigan winter....

And I'm still impressed with my Napa syn....the cav really likes it....and the wife's car loves it's M1...

Now I find myself testing other people's cars...

MiniTransAm. I'm going to fill you in on a little secret.
I work for GM. GM uses Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic in the 3.6 HFV6 Cadillac engine. The same engine on the line (different oil filter) used in other cars get dino oil. Why? because they
follow what other manufactures do. All the high end German
manufactures use synthetic so they have to compete. Thats why
the Cadillac 3.6 has a canister filter like the Euro cars.
The other 3.6 engines get the plain old spin on filter.
Another example is the Ecotec engine. I now have two vehicles
with Ecotec engines. These engines are used in Europe in Vaxhall
and Opel models. Guess what GM recommends in Europe? GM-LL-A-025
oil which is a long life synthetic oil meeting the A3 spec.
like 0w30 Castrol Syntec (GC). But over here in North America
you only need 5w30 dino oil.

That's some funny chit

My wife is always burnt when she finds me gazing at the oil for a half hour. I look at the oil even when I'm not buying any, it's like porn.

UHHH... It is porn..Petroleum Oil Realization Naivete. A newly discovered syndrome running rampant among chatboard members of an oil site. Basically translated, the more you read, the more you think you know, until you realize there is way more to learn. Strangely shows symptoms in auto parts and discount stores. Symptoms include a glassy stare, a dumb look on the face, followed by euphoria when finding a "score". Continued progression of the disease shows basic OCD behavior, a repetitive pattern of visiting oil isles in stores, and a depletion of wealth. Has been known in severe cases to limit intimate moments among couples, break up homes, and limit storage space within the garage, shed, or basement. There is no known cure at this time. Symptoms are sometimes minimized through therapy by Dr. Haas writings, or the application of some products known for extended capabilities.
