So I decided that the Trans Am was going to get an oil change and a top end clean today.
I literally stood in the oil isle at Walmart for about 10 minutes, trying to figured out what the [censored] to buy.
Do I go with Synthetic or not? After all the Corvette requires Synthetic but it says nothing about Synth in my manual unless it's really cold out? What the heck GM it's the same exact engine!
10w-30 or 5w-30? Manual says I can run both. But people on the internet have said they run 15w-50 all the time!
OK, so I can get PP for less than 6 quarts of Maxlife 10w-30. But then again, I have over 120K on the car, so the extra additives in the Maxlife would be better.
But PP is a full synthetic, Maxlife is just a blend.
What about just plain old dino? I can save money and it will probably be fine. But I want above average protection for this motor. Especially on startup.
Mobil1 has high mileage full synthetic now!! But Mobil1 isn't what it used to me, isn't it?
Do I run some Gunk engine flush through it or not? Manual says not to but other people have with no problems. Wonder if it would help this ticking noise I have?
LOL, that was literally my thought process for 10 minutes. Ultimately I went with Maxlife 10w-30 since I've seen nothing but good things about it and it had an awesome UOA on our Outback. I also ran some Gunk motor flush through it first. Used Chrysler foaming top end cleaner through the intake and Seafoam in the gas. Seems to have cleaned up the motor alot. Idles much better. BITOG has given me oil buying anxiety!!!!
