I've always owned new cars, so I've always known their service/oil change history. I'm looking at buying either a 05/06 Honda CRV or 07 Element AWD. Mileage would be around 60-70,000kms. Either model has the Honda K24 engine which is supposedly pretty easy on oil. I'd like to run a high detergent oil for the first oil change. Pennzoil Ultra? Or is that overkill?

Pennzoil Ultra is not overkill!

I put Pennzoil Ultra in my Focus when I bought it. I too had no idea of the prior maintenance history (although the car only had ~21,000 miles on it when I purchased it). The PU was pretty dark/black after 4,000 miles, so I dumped it then.

Does not matter. ANY API rated SM/SN 5w-20 is "overkill" for the engine. Follow the OLM or manual for OCI and you are set. Millions of Honda powered 2.4l engines are going the distance on anything. Bill

If it were me.... Take a look under the fill cap, unless it looks nasty I wouldn't be too concerned. I would maybe do a couple short OCIs 5000km or so and then just follow the MM. Just use what ever you are going to run in it. Still probably overkill but would make me feel a bit more comfortable.

Where are you finding Ultra in Canada though? Do you already have a stash? If not, you'll have to travel to the US to get some.
