Business Insider: Chinese hypersonic weapon that alarmed top US military leaders fired something off as it sped toward its target

Russia was better than us many decades ago too
Yeah, how did that work out?

Well, Russia is currently, successfully, exporting nuclear reactors to sites all over the world, so in some ways, pretty good? Depends on what you are looking at. China is looking to do the same. There's more than one way to exert influence/project power, look at Nordstream 2 and Germany's dependance on Russian gas now...

The claim being made is that somehow the Chinese made a breakthrough with a hypersonic missile that went around the Earth and landed 25 miles from its target. Some say it is a Sputnik moment. However, there is some doubt around it and putting that into actual service is another hurdle. It now presents a problem for the U.S. etc. because our missile defense systems can't track them. So now the government is trying to counter that and not only develop our program faster, but make hypersonic missiles that can shoot down other hypersonic missiles. I was reading about this today.

Spoken like a true Canadian...
Don't worry we will use Canada as a shield...lol

And who did the Chinese steal this technology from???

It wasn't a dig at the US military, rather, highlighting that power projection comes in more than one form. Yes, military bluffs or exhibitions such as these are one technique but there are other, more subtle means of expanding that, I mentioned a few examples in my post.

I know what you were saying.
No problem there.
Just like the anti you know who sentiment over here about buying one countries wares...
A war can be fought many ways...
Many I know unless they have absolutely no choice finally wised up about buying that countries products. Sometimes in this climate that behavior is our only option.

Didn't we just talk about this in another post?

My Cliff Note: hypersonic vehicle is hot and easy to spot with satellite thermal imaging, and it is only faster than non hypersonic vehicle in low altitude trajectory because below hypersonic ICBM at high altitude would still be faster.

This hypersonic nonsense is just an international military-industrial complex money grab.

A bit of an overstatement, there is a threat. But calling this a "Sputnik moment" is also complete hyperbole...

They can barely build a decent jet engine so I'm a bit skeptical. But it is worrying that China is vastly trying to expand its nuclear capability...

Spotting it is one thing. But being able to track something and destroy it is a completely different matter. That's the issue with stealth technology. Sure the IR signature can likely be spotted by satellites, but that's not how medium to long range air defenses lock onto their targets.

I'm still kind of skeptical of how much of a game changer this is right now.

One would think that we would have 21st century high tech land or space based defensive laser technology by now! Seriously, the military has been dickering around with lasers for decades. Reagan’s Star Wars initiative was halted when the Berlin Wall came down but couldn’t it be revived? Honestly, Buck Rogers had a ‘Ray‘ gun 90 years ago! LOL

There is ongoing laser research, the Army is on the cusp of an antitank weapon. The endless deployments of the last 20 years has been the mitigating factor...

The direction our current military leaders are going now, when it comes time for war again, our soldiers will be wearing high heels and carrying purses into combat.
I think the men and woman in today's military are just as competent and dedicated as those who came before them. What worries me is if we had to go to a draft in the event of hostilities....I don't think our 'younger civilians' are up to it.....sadly...
