I got a 1995 BMW M3 in 2000 with 93M on it and have been using 20-50 dino oil with changes about every 5M, at which time the countdown lights for oil change are only about half way down.

With that oil it used about a quart every 3M

Then last time I changed to M1 red top 15-50 and it's been burning a quart every 14000-1800 miles.

Is that bad for the combustion chambers?

Should I go back to dino oil?

Thanks,

Jim

Their are many reasons for oil consumption. Have a quick read.

With any high mileage car, when switching to a high detergent synthetic, it can take up to 5,000 miles before oil consumption settles down.

In my car, after the first 4,000 miles of the cars life using dino, I switched to Mobil 1 EP. It burned a little bit after not using any previously with dino. It has since stopped completely as far as I can tell.

Mobil 1 is a low volatile oil with Noak % range from 7-10%, well below the 15% requirement. Give it some time before switching. I think too many switch too soon. Redline has the same effect. I ran in my Toyota and the car drank the oil at a rate it never had before on multiple oils. If after your first oil change or 5k + miles, it hasn't stopped, then look for a new oil.
