are they better than the regular b&s?

It's mostly a marketing scheme. The higher end series might have better air filtration, forced lube, spin-on oil filters, etc.. Does that make it better for a residential application? Not really IMO.

I agree, this Gold Series Engine probably does not come close too a Kawasaki or Kohler Engine.

I, for one, still have some faith in B&S. I haven't heard any specifics about the gold series and it doesn't look like anybody else has either.
