I just finished putting my built (forged rods, pistons, coated bearings) Nissan KA24DE (4-cyl turbo) together and need recommendations for a break-in oil. I currently put Valvoline conventional 10w30 in there. What would you guys recommend? Would adding a bit of the Redline Break-In additive be beneficial or should I use a HDEO?

Does this engine have a roller cam or flat tappet?
KA24DE's aren't flat tappet stock... I used to have one of those engines, they were excellent, durable motors. I always used Valvoline in mine, but since yours is built I wouldn't be able to make any recommendations for it...

Thanks for the info guys. Once it is all broken in what do you reccomend that I run. This motor will be pushing much more that factory power with the turbo setup (close to 400whp). I am torn between Redline and Amsoil, I have used Royal Purple in the past and felt power differences but did not like the reports of shearing I started to hear.
Factory calls for a 5w30 or 10w30 I think, but was thinking that with the extra heat, and the slightly increased clearance I am running with the pistons that a 10w-40 or 20w-50 may be the right call.

If all your clearances are larger than stock, I'd go a 5W-40 route (synthetic).

The first motor I ever rebuilt with my shop teacher in 1988 (a vw) .... this EXACTLY what he always did.
The said the first 20-30 minutes help 'set' the cam. We had a manual oil pressure guauge on that thing and watched the psi whole time.

Pennzoil 10w30 conventional would be a good option as well but nothing wrong with the Valvoline either.
Take this with a big grain of salt, because it's only something I *heard* once, but I heard non-detergent 30 wt works really well for break-in.

Dump the 10w30 Valvoline and use Shell Rotella HDEO straight 30 wt. for the intial break-in period, (and beyond if you want).
An additional oil additive is highly recommended if this is a flat tappet cam engine.
