You never know what is zip tied to the roof rack on the vehicle in front of you…

Just brought my new to me 2012 Nissan Armada home from the dealer yesterday. I knew there was a roof rack basket of sorts on top that I wanted to remove.

So I took it off yesterday evening. Well what do you know, it isn’t a roof rack basket. At least not a proper one. It was three heavy metal utility shelves lined up and zip tied together and zip tied down to the roof rack. I then proceeded to start cutting the zip ties for removal only to find they were so old and brittle that they just crumbled in my hands.

It wouldn’t have taken much with the brittle zip ties to tear that off the roof rack while driving down the road. Imagine that flying off the top of the vehicle on the road and going through a windshield.

I like to think the world is a safer place with it off, but it leaves me wondering what else people are driving around with, just zip tied to their roof rack…

With zip ties? Doesn’t sound the best with severe weather…
They usually last about 2 years. Just gotta put the clamp end at the bottom so hail doesn't destroy them. Doesn't take long to realize something big and bulky absolutely destroys gas mileage. I use a cargo rack instead for my suv. Along with expanded metal and 4 layers of protective film on all my headlights, taillights, windows, etc.

You live bigger than @Zee09 !

If you look at the build quality of 95% of trailers, it's astonishing we don't each know several people killed every year from trailers falling apart.

Ditto for people who secure cars or SxSs on a trailer from a sprung point (frame or body)

Then there's this (I personally took these photos)

So, you see.... that roof rack is small potatoes in a world of big stupid -- unfortunately
