Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) Changes Its Operator’s Guides in Regards to Warranty Coverage
Multiple recent operator’s guides for Ski-Doo snowmobiles and Can-Am ATVs, manufactured by Bombardier Recreational Products Inc. (BRP), advise customers that it is necessary to use BRP-branded lubricants or risk the loss of warranty coverage, while some guides also state there is “no known equivalent” to the branded BRP lubricant on the market.

AMSOIL confronted BRP and asserted that its warranty language violated the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a federal law which prohibits manufacturers from requiring the use of a branded service/replacement part unless the branded service/replacement part is provided free of charge or is not intended for use in consumer applications, and emphasized that AMSOIL synthetic lubricants meet or exceed the engine performance requirements for both two- and four-cycle engines used in powersports equipment.

BRP has agreed to modify the language in its operator’s guides to no longer indicate that use of oil other than the BRP-branded product may void the warranty, to clearly identify product recommendations as recommendations rather than requirements and to no longer comment on the availability of equivalents to the BRP brand oil(s).

Not defending BRP, but they pay Castrol a LOT of money developing their oil. They also have QC mandates, usually something like 300hours of wide open throttle without damage. Rotax toasts a lot of motors in the process and using the right lube is part of it. For example they stayed with a heavy brightstock component when everyone else went with the PIB's. Testing showed it worked better, So the ripoff prices and warranty implications may be a way a to recover some of the costs. Also it's about the only thing the dealers have that make money anymore, since parts are bought over the internet, So maybe a lot of the oil pricing has to do with rewarding the dealers? When a new engine is proved on one oil I don't think it's too far fetched, especially in the twostroke powersport market, where the wrong oils have been found to cause problems. These machines aren't your fathers oldsmobile, their very high specific output small engines. Amsoil has a full productline NOW, but there was a day they and the uneducated overzellious dealers WOULD have had you running the wrong stuff in your machine. Seen it, used it saw the results. The fact they still push 100:1 off on people as a viable alternative is a good example. Years ago it was outboard oil for everything, cause that's all the had.

WileyE said it perfectly. During engine testing, BRP's engines have a certain spec to maintain and they meet it with BRP oil's. Not saying other oil's won't cut it but for durability, the engine was tested with BRP oil.
